How meaningful would eternal life be for humanity if it only meant an eternity of pain and suffering?

This is precisely the question that Jesus came to answer. The night before He was crucified, Jesus erased the tension between living forever and the purpose of humankind; Jesus taught, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3). Apart from the one true God, human existence is futile and meaningless. But in Jesus, humanity discovers the purpose of eternal life—to know God.

Earlier that same night, Jesus expanded upon this theme when He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

In essence, the only way to have meaning in life is to know the one true God; but the only way to know God is through Jesus.

Therefore, God provided a means for all mankind to escape an existence of eternal death and suffering. In fact, the Bible explains that while the result of sin is eternal death, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

If you could discover how to receive God’s gift of eternal life—a life of meaning, purpose, and joy—wouldn’t you want to know how?
