John 17

Growing up, and even as an adult, some of my favorite moments were having personal conversations with my father. In those times, he would give me instruction in life, sometimes give me correction, teach me the importance of obedience, and finish by telling me how much he loved me. Some of us may have a giving father; some of us maybe not so giving; while others may not even have had a father growing up. Even though the Bible has many accounts of father/son relationships, my mind goes to one of my favorite parts of Scripture, John chapter 17. Here we get a glimpse of the personal conversation and relationship between the Heavenly Father and the Son of God. It is a very special moment that God wanted us to see through His Word. Salvation has made me an adopted son, as I have now been adopted into His family. I cannot help but think what my Heavenly Father has given us through His Son.

1. He gave us eternal life by giving His only begotten Son, whom He loved, that He may be our Heavenly Father.

Verse 2, "As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him."

2. He gave us an example of obedience through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Verse 4, "I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do."

3. He gave us His Word that we may have the Truth.

Verse 8, "For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me."

Verse 14, "I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world."

4. He gave us our Intercessor.

Verse 9, "I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine."

Also, Verses 10-20.

5. He gave us eternal security and an eternal family through His Son.

Verse 11, "And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are."

6. He gave us the One who gives us joy in our lives.

Verse 13, "And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves."

7. He gave us the One that gave us a responsibility to share the Gospel with the world.

Verse 18, "As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world."

8. He gave us the opportunity to be a child of God.

Verse 21, "That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me."

9. He gave us the privilege to share in the glory of what Christ fulfilled on the cross.

Verse 22, "And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:"

10. He gave us the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Verse 23, "I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me."

This upcoming Father's Day, let us not only honor our earthly fathers, but most of all our Heavenly Father who has given more than we could ever imagine. The Creator of the universe desires to have a personal relationship with you. Start by thanking Him for what He has given you and have a personal conversation with Him today.
